Stationery for schools covers everything a school buys for learners and staff, from grade stationery lists and exercise books to staffroom paper, files and whiteboard markers. StationerySupplies.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your list to independent stationery suppliers for schools near you, who quote you directly. We do not sell, stock or deliver anything ourselves, and there is no fee or obligation to accept a quote. Send your stationery list, learner numbers and the date you need it on site.
What schools usually order
A typical school order has two halves: learner stationery and running supplies for the school itself.
- Learner items: exercise books, pencils, crayons, erasers, rulers, glue, scissors and pens
- Classroom items: chart paper, flip files, prestik, whiteboard markers and dusters
- Admin and staff: A4 paper, toner, lever arch files, registers and record books
Many schools ask parents to buy from a stationery list, while others buy centrally and charge a stationery fee. Central buying usually gets better prices and keeps every class on the same items.
Stationery lists and LTSM for public schools
Public schools buy learning and teaching support material (LTSM) under provincial rules. Section 21 schools that manage their own budget order directly from suppliers, usually after getting three quotes. Other schools order through the provincial department's system. Either way, suppliers need the grade stationery list with quantities per learner, the number of learners per grade and any approved catalogue codes. Ask suppliers to quote line by line so the governing body can compare like with like. Keep copies of every quote and the signed order, because auditors and the department may ask to see how the supplier was chosen. If the list names a specific brand, mark whether an equivalent item is acceptable, since this widens the field of suppliers and often lowers the price.
Packing per class and delivery before term
Good stationery suppliers for schools will pack per grade or per class and label each carton, so teachers are not sorting boxes on the first day. Some will also bundle items per learner; see stationery packs. Ask whether delivery is free above a minimum order, whether they carry stock into the building, and how short deliveries are handled. Quotes normally include 15% VAT for registered suppliers, and most expect an official order and EFT or an approved account.
Beat the January rush on school stationery
December and January are the busiest months in the stationery trade, and popular items run short just before schools open. Finalise next year's stationery list by October or November and order then, with delivery booked for the last week of the holidays. Late orders can still be quoted, but lead times stretch and substitutes become more likely. Agree a delivery window with the supplier and make sure someone is on site to count cartons and sign the delivery note. For bigger contracts, see stationery tenders.
