Buying stationery in Mthatha

Mthatha is the commercial centre of the former Transkei and the OR Tambo district, so government departments, the district and King Sabata Dalindyebo municipalities, hospitals and courts are core buyers of files, forms, toner and office furniture through CSD-based procurement. Walter Sisulu University's Mthatha campus and the local TVET college add steady campus demand, and a huge number of rural schools rely on stationery deliveries before the January term, often to villages on gravel roads. Most stock comes about 230 km from East London along the N2, or from Durban, so two to three working days is typical and consolidated orders save on freight.

Typical school stationery requests in the area come from:

• Government and municipalities: provincial LTSM orders for public schools, priced per catalogue item and delivered per school
• Schools: grade stationery lists, exercise books and staffroom supplies ordered and packed per class
• Universities and colleges: foundation phase and teacher training colleges stocking practice classrooms and resource rooms
• Offices and small businesses: staff children's school stationery bought in bulk as an employee benefit before term
• Shops and resellers: stationery shops and spazas stocking up on list items ahead of the January rush
• Weddings, conferences and events: back-to-school drives and church outreach days handing out stationery to learners
