Buying stationery in Johannesburg

Johannesburg is the country's biggest stationery market and its main distribution point. Banks, mining houses, law firms and agencies in the CBD, Braamfontein, Rosebank and Parktown order paper, toner, printing and branded items constantly, while Wits, UJ and hundreds of schools add strong seasonal demand. City of Johannesburg departments, Gauteng provincial offices and public hospitals buy through tenders and the CSD. Because so many wholesalers, importers and print houses are based in and around the city, same-day or next-day delivery is common for stock items. Load-shedding pushed many offices to put printers and network equipment on UPS or inverter backup, and that habit has stuck.

Typical art supplies requests in the area come from:

• Offices and small businesses: creative agencies and design studios buying markers, sketch pads and presentation boards
• Government and municipalities: community arts centres and libraries stocking paint and craft supplies for workshops
• Schools: poster paint, brushes, crayons and craft materials ordered for the year's art classes
• Universities and colleges: fine art and design students' canvases, artist paint and drawing materials for studios
• Shops and resellers: craft and stationery shops buying wholesale art supplies by the carton to resell
• Factories and warehouses: workshops and sign makers buying paint markers, brushes and modelling materials
• Weddings, conferences and events: kids' parties, paint-and-sip evenings and church holiday clubs needing paint and canvases

Why compare quotes in Johannesburg?

Prices for art supplies in Johannesburg depend on the brand and grade, pack sizes, how much you order and how far the supplier delivers. A quote based on your list is the quickest way to know what you will pay, and it shows what is included before you order.

What to include in your request

• List paint type, colour and bottle or tube size
• Say whether you want student or artist grade
• Give canvas and pad sizes
• Mention class numbers for class sets
• State your delivery address and deadline

The more detail you give, the more accurate your quote will be.
