Buying stationery in Durban

Durban runs Africa's busiest container port, so freight forwarders, clearing agents and logistics depots in the harbour and South Durban basin buy enormous volumes of labels, waybills, toner, cartons and packaging tape. Corporate offices in Umhlanga and the city centre, eThekwini municipality, UKZN, DUT and thousands of schools add to demand, with a strong January back-to-school peak. Conferences at the ICC and wedding venues order printed programmes, name tags and invitations. Many national stationery and packaging wholesalers keep warehouses in Durban, including around Dube TradePort and Pinetown, so same-day or next-day delivery is normal across the metro.

Typical art supplies requests in the area come from:

• Offices and small businesses: creative agencies and design studios buying markers, sketch pads and presentation boards
• Factories and warehouses: workshops and sign makers buying paint markers, brushes and modelling materials
• Schools: poster paint, brushes, crayons and craft materials ordered for the year's art classes
• Government and municipalities: community arts centres and libraries stocking paint and craft supplies for workshops
• Universities and colleges: fine art and design students' canvases, artist paint and drawing materials for studios
• Weddings, conferences and events: kids' parties, paint-and-sip evenings and church holiday clubs needing paint and canvases
• Shops and resellers: craft and stationery shops buying wholesale art supplies by the carton to resell
